Afternoon at the river 01 by Ciril Afternoon at the river 01 by Ciril
I personally think that my best kind of photography is photojournalism - people.
I want to present you one series or story of about 20 photos with title: Afternoon at the river
please visit: [link]

Some of you know that I took part at international photographic workshop in Slovenia called Fotopub [link] . It is an amazing workshop!! There were about 16 exhebitions of really great photographers (hehe i also had one), several world famoues photographers were there (also one ex-magnum photographer)....there were lectures all the time...and all kind of sessions.... each participant had mentors and.... you know we lived 7 days with photography.... :)

So one of the stories or projects that I had done there was a story "Afternoon at the river".

All photos were taken in one afternoon. To be more exactly in 4-5 hours! But the best shots were taken in the last hour. Why? Well imagine a photographer jumping around swimmers at the river and taking pictures of them. People would be shocked right? Well I had a great mentor overthere (Balazs Gardi) who teached me how to destroy that obstacle between subject and yourself. anyway I succeeded and I actually get a very nice relation with those swimmers... they trusted me after while. Firstly there reactions were very like what do you want and so.... but finaly they accepted me. And when poeple do that you win!

Remember what Robert Capa used to say: Your pictures are not good enough if you are not close enough. ;)

I am very proud on this collection... I suprised my self in fact. And I have also received excellent opinions from mentors, photographers, editors...

About this picture:
this girl was running and i came closer to take a picture. as soon she saw me she changed her direction. luckily i captured her in a very interesting pose.

The quote is ""If your pictures aren't good enough, you're not close enough," I believe, and this is a interesting shot. Very in-the-moment.

Sometimes words just aren't enough - but know that I enjoyed the series thoroughly, some of the photographs easily slipped into my all-time favourites.
You've got a gift and you use it well

i am not sure if this is kind of photography to post on DA. those photos don`t work so well as single shots i think.

I don't know where to being. But when I looked at this image I immediatly thought Sally Mann, a fabulous photographer whom I admire greatly and this image matches her style greatly. Yet I must say, this is totally you, the journalistic aproach, the people, the somewhat familiar look. The composition is incredibly nice and the fact tat thie girl is just a little out of focus makes is almost unoticeable and even gives a little interest to the photograph, it has a sense of reality and a sense of togetherness. The thing is, if the girl was in focus this would have been much more of a portrait, it could have even been a color portrat where the main point was the girl leaving everything out of the frame. This picture with the family in the background in focus, leaves the picture up to interpretation, you get a story out of the family in the background. And in the end you get a beautiful B&W picture with all the elements. The slight tilt of the frame also helped the compostion a lot, that's a very good detail. And the last thing that I can say about this picture is the smile on the girl's face, such a wonderful, natural, real smile. It makes me feel comfortable inside. Yep this picture makes me feel comfortable.
