The story of Kiribati mirrors the modern life in many developing Pacific countries – nations that have fallen to hardship due to global warming and rising sea levels. Kiribati is a small island nation of 33 atolls spread out in the South Pacific; the area is the size of Alaska but the amount of dry land could fit within Manhattan. Inhabited by about 100,830 people, Kiribati is among the world's poorest countries.

Kiribati aroused my curiosity after I'd read an interview with Anote Tong, the president of the small island nation, who warned about his country becoming uninhabitable due to the rising sea levels and increasing salination. As Mr. Tong put it: "Kiribati might already have reached the point of no return. To plan for the day when you no longer have a country is indeed painful, but I think we have to do that."

I travelled to Kiribati for a month to witness first-hand the problems and challenges of the small island country. I focused on photographing the natives and their everyday lives. The story of Kiribati is a complex one, and the rising sea levels are by no means the only threat the country faces. While the country may go the way of Atlantis, there are even more severe and imminent problems with freshwater supply and with salination killing plant life.

The main objective of the project is to invite people from all over the world to really think – and to take action in their everyday lives, to put pressure on world leaders. Not simply to enjoy the photos, but to actively consider what's going on. The people of Kiribati don't want us to just feel sorry for them. They want the world to admit responsibility for their problems related to climate change.

Once in a while the planets align and I get to do a project purely for my own heart and soul. I put a lot of myself in all my work, but such a project is all that more personal and gratifying.

The western-coloured story pictures a girl searching for her lost friend. The inspiration came from a movie trailer, True Grit by the Coen brothers. In the movie, the main protagonist loses her father and sets out to find his murderer. I was not looking to do a fashion series, but rather a a series of western memoir photos, inspired by parts of the movie.

The photos were shot in a single day, on different locations in Italy, near the Slovenian border. The scenery was amazing, especially the horse ranch. It doesn’t get any more western than this! The model is Barbara from the Croation agency Midikenn . Barbara has worked in fashion capitals across the globe and for clients like Levi’s and Paul Smith. Her looks and expression are just what I wanted and fit perfectly with my story. All her experience really shows, she impressed the whole team!

It was a great day with great people, enriching both my life and my portfolio. A big thanks to everyone who helped this happen! I’m really pleased with the photos. What do you think of them? Share your thoughts in the comments

Hong Kong is one of the most dynamic economies in the world. It is all about making money. Everybody is in a hurry all the time. I visited HK in the beginning of May for few days when returning from a business trip in China. My friend from Shanghai told me that competition in HK is incredibly high. Because of all day working there is no time for families and partners. But this series is more than that. On first two pictures you can see very good what people from HK look like. They are very individual and closed. Many couples get to know each other via agencies and organised dates. Futhermore I continue with two very funny pictures with a huge contrast. I really love to find more stories in one particular picture. For example on third one you have a couple in a romantic mood, but on the left there is that lost lady searching for something... No worries I am not going to explane more although it is hard not to mention the fifth picture. Is she trying to escape? I especially enjoy the thing with races going on. Her expression is awesome. Ok ok enough....find your own story...and share me your thoughts. Thank you!

From HK with love.

2007-A fantastic year. :)

Mon Dec 31, 2007, 3:26 AM
I wish you all the best in 2008! I want to tell you that you CAN do anything. I want to explane you that you can move borders. I wish you all that because You live only once and because it is possible. ;)

What about 2007? It was a fantastic year for me but also very busy and stressful sometimes. There are some facts which I didn't mention because I almost forgot on DA.

-I have bought a Canon 5D and 24-70 2.8 which is btw a tool to dream about (it feels like shooting film!).
-I have switched to Mac! Apple Macbook Pro is amazing thing. And software like Aperture made my work 5 times faster.
-Studio; Bought 2 lights from Elinchrom and all others things from lightbox and so on...
-Last week I added to my mac a 24" Dell screen and now I feel like in kindergarten hehe.

-Travel to Morocco which was one of the best travels in my life. No worries I will submit pictures.
-One week London and 2 days seminar by VII (yes that agency).

-And finishing this year with profit which I am going to invest of course. ;) I managed to get higher in slovenian advertising and commercial photography.

-The only negative thing is that I couldn't organise a solo exhibition. In fact I really had problems sometimes with time. It is quite challenging to have in balance everything from university to photography. And not to mention my personal photography. There is still a potencial that I probably didn't work enough on because I had problems with time and spending energy. :)

What is the best charm in Photography for you?

Right now I have this worst/best feeling when you capture frames on film and you know that they are damn good and you just can`t wait to develop them. :)
I am looking for really good answers. :) What makes us photographers special?

Here are some thoughts I had somewhere on my disc;

Everyone can`t read magazines, books, newspapers,
but everyone can "read" pictures.
The most powerful "weapon" can be and it is photography!

Military weapons can only destroy.

Cameras in hands of photographes with hearts can capture love, hope, passion, joy...change life and make the world better.

...and all that in small parts of a second.

Life goes on and we take pictures of it. :)

3. I was at his exhebition in New York. When I talk about him I can easily use next words; impressive, new, fresh, spectacular, original, great, fantastic, top work, priceless...
I love moments, feelings, stories, compositions, lights that he is able to capture in so many pictures with such extraordinary subjects.

...of fashion, architecture, commercial, fancy art..... photographers.....

people out there are dying. on every 3 seconds one child dies of fucking povery.

in 2007?

we should take pictures of such things.... isn`t that a point of photographers also?

to get stories, messages.... to aware the whole world about serious issues....like wars, hunger, poverty....

so many people every single day....

am i too naive?

i have had this on my mind for some time now.

i am loosing respect for what i have been shooting. i cant believe it.
because i know that i can make good pictures.

and maybe is should take good pictures of something else.

maybe you too.

:(

Francesco Zizola is one of many photojournalist I respect so much: [link]

and don`t forget to visit websites like ONE and similar from time to time....[link]

and be grateful as much as you can for good life....for water...for food...for security....for peace....

... hi :P

thanks for buying few prints people. i am going to submit more.

i might submit few pictures as well.

maybe.

cuz

i am so tired of DA...I have no motivation to be here anymore.

there is a real life outside...

i have so much work with uni (economy-marketing)...

and it is really difficult to "harmonize" studies, photography, girlfriend, family, friends....

there is no time for DA at all. I can only check it  few times per month what few people I like are doing. And many had already left....

btw my web page www.ciriljazbec.com is extremely successful...it has received very prestigious award FWA. and about 90.000 people have visited it in 1.5 month.

i have got few offers yes...maybe i will be shooting for maldives tourist agency... maybe...

but my biggest photography project now is to get all my good pictures on stock agencies like corbis, getty.... they say i could get lots of money from that.

and how are you?

have you seen new project Meditative dance on my page?

and thanks for support.

in the end....

one crazy and happy new year. ;)

remember;
everything depends on you. you are captain of your life. everything is possible. what you need is courage, will, hard work, positivism, persistence and some magic. ;)

see ya,
ciril :)
